The Kolbe A™ Index is designed to measure the actions you take that result from your natural instincts. But, how are you using your Kolbe A results to have a productive, successful 2020? Here’s how to get started:

1. Consider your goals (dare I say resolutions?) for the new year

Even if you’re not one to set resolutions at the start of a new year, you may have some personal and professional goals that you’d like to see accomplished this year – big or small. Using what you’ve learned from your Kolbe A result, consider how your unique instinctive strengths can help you reach those goals.

Specifically, how do the strategies you’ve identified for your goal work within your strengths zone or cause you to work in a way that is unnatural.?

For example, let’s say your goal is to lose weight by going to the gym and doing the same routine every week – that strategy may be great, or it may work against your MO and cause you to drop off after a week or two? If you have that Quick Start need for uncertainty or improvisation, maybe you need a new workout each day or each week. An initiating Fact Finder may need to focus more on researching the best routine for a specific body type and the best meal program to complement the weight loss goal.

Remember that for most things, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer and you’ll need to look at your MO to find the best ways of achieving your goals this year.

2. Do a self-stress audit

We’ve seen stats showing that workplace stress is costing American businesses up to $300 billion a year.

If  you’re stressed at work, or just finding that something’s not “right” with your current position, take a Kolbe B index to identify potential stress based on your perception of your job and see where your Kolbe B result and Kolbe A result may differ.

Once you do that,  you can better identify  – down to the task level – what may be causing your personal stress and how you can do what comes naturally to you as you do your work.

3. Examine your relationships

Knowing your MO can change how you leverage your natural strengths – but when you get the other people in your life to start taking advantage of their natural strengths,  you can more easily discuss your differences, laugh about them and develop techniques for dealing with them.

In the office, consider inviting a co-worker to take the Kolbe so that he/she can better understand the way they work and help them to be free to be themselves.

The Kolbe A is useful at home, too. If you agree with any of the following three statements, it’s probably time to work with your loved one(s) to compare MOs and find common ground:

  • you wish you could say what you want in a relationship without it being perceived as a criticism
  • you feel like your spouse is always trying to change you
  • you need to “talk it out” but feel like your spouse always “yups” and “nopes”

Kolbe’s approach to relationships compares reality with expectations and explains the dynamics behind individual actions and reactions. Once you know how the different MOs in your household work together – or present conflict – you can better decide things like who takes the lead on various chores and other household related decisions.  A Takes Two custom relationship guide can help you get started.
